Basket of Hope – Delivering Hope to the Elderly in Tema, Manhean, Ghana, Dec 28th 2022

The theme of food distribution was called ‘Basket of Hope’ and that was to give hope and provide food supplies to the elderly men and women and men that live in extreme poverty in Tema Manhean, Tema metropolitan, located on the coastal region of Greater, Accra region.

The Tema Manhean, Ghana is a fishing community in Greater Region of Accra where the community derives its livelihood from fishing. It is a major source of employment for the community and the families. The area also attracts people from other communities that settled there to engage in fishing because of the presence of the sea.

Every member of the household in that area is a worker in the fishing unit and it extends to other family’s members that participate in the fishing business. They perform various jobs where you will find a crew of men, boys, and children going out into the seas to fish, to the loading of fish, handling fish, mending nets, and the wives and women processing, distributing, and selling fish in the market to generate income for the families.

There is high level poverty because fishing is the main predominant activity and most of the people living in the area have limited skills for other occupations. This restricts the mobility of the families to venture into other areas to generate income and thus resulting in limited access to other livelihoods options.

Bread of Life International through Elderly Food Assistance & Care, collaborated with SOS Children’s Village, Ghana a non-governmental organization focus on supporting children without parental care to provide food energies, “Basket of Hope” to the 30 elderly women, men and their families in the community.

What were in the basket? The baskets were filled with assortment of food supplies – bag of rice, oil, tin tomatoes, geisha, Maggie, coke, biscuit, malt and Don Simon, drinks and much more that will last 3-4 months of food supplies.

With the help of youth volunteers from SOS Children’s Village Tema and community-based volunteers from the area, Bread of Life International safely distributed food supplies to the elderly within the community

The elderly women, men and their families were grateful and appreciated and surprise for the food supplies. It came at a time where the economic situation in the country has worsened due to fluctuation of currency that has resulted increased in food prices in the country.

Bread of Life International will like to thank all our donors that contributed to Elderly Food Assistance & Care program targeting impoverish elderly women, men and families. Without their support and contribution, we could not have reached out to the poor.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to Alex Kekula, National Director of SOS Children’s Village, Tema, Ghana,  Godknows Kporha, the National Youth Development Advisor, the FS Coordinator, Youth Development Worker, the Assembly Member and staff of DSW and SOS Children’s Volunteer Youth and others that collaborated with Bread of Life International to safely distributed the food.

There are many poor and impoverished elderlies that we would like to reach out and support. You can join us by donating $20 per month that will go towards providing food supplies to the elderly that are hungry and hurting.
